Institut Superieur des Beaux-Arts de Besancon

I have just begun a 7 week residency at the Institut Superieur des Beaux-Arts de Besancon, in the Franche-Comte region of France. I will be working here on a project (yet to come to m), and assisting the students in their English.
Besancon is a beautiful town, with a famous citadel. The school is placed within an Industrial estate, and the view from my window is a sea of little tin chimneys, all different sizes, and each spouting smoke at different times.
Last night i spent an hour trying to say the word "trou" (hole) correctly.

The Library of Lost Books

A few months ago, i was asked to participate in a project launched as a consequence of Birmingham Library's clear out. This project involves the rescue, distribution and re-collection of discarded books, coming together to form a new Library of Lost Books. The project's website can be viewed at:
http://thelibraryoflostbooks.blogspot.co.uk/

I received 2 volumes, numbers 5 & 6, of the Classische Theater-Bibliothek, a collection of German language play-scripts, originally sent out as a periodical in the 1800s. They were bound together by Birmingham Reference Library in 1942 and remained on the shelves, at location 808.2 for 70 years, until they were removed and sent to me.

What i was most drawn to, within Volume 5, was a slip inserted at the back of the book, stating that the Shakespeare play's were duplicate and had been disposed of. The book had then been rebound, shrinking the spine, pulling it into the book.

Hours of research led me to the realization that all the books in Volume 6 were duplicate, if one was to consider the whole world's libraries. I therefore decided to document the cataloging system of each and every play in the same format, disposing of the pages, and rebinding the book to account for its new and reduced pages.

Current Obsessions feature on Decalcomania

The reflective platform, Current Obsessions, dedicated to contemporary jewellery, has featured the project Decalcomania, created by Hermione Spriggs and I in April 2011.
With a moto of "jewellery is what you make of it", meaning that they do not comply with accepted boundaries, preferring to claim things to "become", to open the potential possibilities of the contemporary jewellery field.

DP-70

I have recently installed a "drawing" of a DP-70 film projector in 35mm film at the City Screen Picturehouse Cinema in York. The drawing fills a 15 x 3.5 m wall, and was completed in honor of the Aesthetica Film Festival 2011.

Re-Location

Well, I have moved from York, westwards to the Pennines, and am enjoying a new, albeit very different life, out in the country. I have embarked on a PhD, with the hope to turn my passion for art and education into something that will instigate some discussions over past and present practice.
I'm still making, and will keep you posted....

Field Exchange - A Collaboration Between Hermione Spriggs and Suzi Tibbetts

‘a gift increases in vitality the more it is given’

Field Exchange is a collaborative project instigated by Hermione Spriggs and Suzi Tibbetts. Throughout YOS 2011 a widening circle of object exchange will interlink the two artists’ studios, incorporating salvaged curios and members of the visiting public.
The ‘works in progress’ will be carried by visitors across the field between the two sites to continue their creation as the event unfolds.
An exhibition of the hoard of resultant artefacts from 'Field Exchange' will take place from 14th to 16th April 2011 at Bar Lane Studios.

Decalcomania at the National Railway Museum

Decalcomania

“Queen posts”
“Sprag”
“Diamond Switch”
“Shoe beam”
"Jim Crow"

Glass cases of organized, annotated objects present a veneer of truth. They exude an aura of impenetrable distance: the standard museum display presents a one-way system of knowledge dissemination. Decalcomania is a collaborative project between Suzi Tibbetts and Hermione Spriggs. Beginning with terms taken from the railway dictionary, and obstinately blind to their original definition, new object-subjects will be intuitively fabricated. These artworks (‘faux’-artefacts) will then be inserted into cabinets within the Station Hall.
